tHAWT Episode #101: Quite a Gaggle

In this episode we reached a record attendance of six instructors--Dave, Mark, Michel, Paul, Peter, and Trevor--quite a feat for us. Needless to say we had some lively discussions on a variety of topics as well as the leftover rumor from last week, if Google was really going to buy Skype. Here are some links to topics that were brought up during the discussions.

The Time Warner Cable Ad Verizon doesn't like

FCC approved emergency text messages

Google at RSA conference

Backscatter from GMail

Power grid hack

Is faster Internet even needed?

FTTH being sold to 10 M homes in the U.S.

More on Femtocells

During the recording we mentioned Tracphone and Virgin America as the two successfull MVNOs. This weekend I was looking for a temporary mobile phone option for a friend from Denmark, currently there is no GSM roaming in Vermont. My search took me to several stores in the area. In one I was offered the Virgin America and Tracphone options. The cost was impressively low. Phone were as low as $10 and calling as low as 10c per minute. Neither option offered much in the way of frills, atleast not in Vermont. So it seems the MVNO secret to success is cheap phones and minutes with no obligation.

In the end I got a SIM card from Unicel. Their pay as you go lan comes in a couple fo different flavors and is considerably more than Tracfone, which runs on their network in Vermont. Similarly the Verizon Wireless prepay plan is more expensive than the Virgin America plan that runs on their network.

Go figure.
